Brian Bates

System Director, Philanthropy Communications and Engagement

Brian Bates serves as System Director, Philanthropy Communications and Engagement for CommonSpirit Health Philanthropy’s national team, joining the ministry in 2021. In this role, he leads executive-level strategy and support by promoting best practices in philanthropic giving programs, communications, marketing, public and media relations, resource management, stewardship and professional development.

With a deep background in higher education philanthropy and communications, Brian brings more than 25 years of experience to CommonSpirit. At Washington State University, he led direct marketing appeals, implemented fundraising and engagement technology solutions, and drove engagement through events at two of the university’s six campuses (Pullman and Vancouver). For the last 15 years, he served in several capacities at San José State University, where he gained experience in non-profit financial management, campaigns and campaign planning, and board development. From 2011-2021, he served as Associate Vice President for Alumni and Community Engagement. He developed the vision and led planning for three areas focused on engaging the university’s alumni and constituents: annual giving, alumni engagement and special events.

A native of Pullman, Washington, Brian earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Washington State University and a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills. A resident of the bay area, he enjoys exploring other parts of the country, attending music festivals and sporting events while learning local history, culture and cuisine.
